Over 150 homeless people have for several years been living in makeshift tents and shelters in an encampment alongside the local river. There is little violence in the camp, but health, sanitation, and safety conditions are very poor, and many of the people are addicted to alcohol or drugs.
Last week, local law enforcement agencies announced that they would be permanently “evicting” the homeless people from the camp in one month. They have not made any plans for what to do with the people. Rather, they have only told the people to “move out or be arrested.”
