Quoting Ten Articles
For this assignment, be sure to watch the secrets to writing your first paper video. This video will contain the basic idea of what this assignment is about.
To receive full credit, remember the following:
Quote 10 articles
These articles should be scientific articles (generally, no blog posts, YouTube videos, or news articles)
Your quotes should be exact. Feel free to copy and paste from the articles.
Remember to cite the quotations in APA format:
use in-text citations for the quoted text
precede the in-text citation with the full citation of the article (see the template)
Each article must be quoted at least once
Try to avoid quoting one article excessively, while only quoting others rarely
What should you quote? Good question, wise student of mine. Students often do best when they quote:
Conclusions made by the author from their study. Conclusions are often found in the discussion and abstract.
Theories/rationale that guided their research questions. Very often, the same rationale they used to formulate their hypothesis will be useful for your hypothesis. These are often found in the introduction/discussion sections of the paper.
References to additional reading material. Many times a paper will cite other papers that discuss a particular topic. Sometimes it’s useful to quote these so it’s easier to access them later.
Statistics/strong logical statements to justify your study. Often papers cite important statistics or make strong theoretical statements for why a study is important to perform. These might be worth citing.
I would avoid spending time quoting:
Any text in the method section. The method section informs the reader how they performed their study (including measures used, sample size, experimental stimuli, planned statistical analysis, etc.). Conclusions gleaned should be independent of how they gleaned their conclusions. However, if something in their method section was particularly weak and that’s relevant to your study, then surely it might be quoted. Otherwise, don’t worry about it.
Any text in the results section. Results sections are written only to present data. They generally do NOT present conclusions gleaned from the data. Conclusions are found in the discussion. In other words, the results section should contain a lot of statistics, with little substance. The meat should follow in the discussion.
As always, the following page shows a template you must use for turning in your assignment. Because I’m lazy, this template only quotes two articles, but yours should, of course, quote ten.
May the force be with you.
