Poetry has been around for thousands of years, and used as a form of written expression. Writing, is the form of poetry, usually manifest as a literary work of a person’s feeling and ideas. While reading poetry, a person is usually motivated by connecting and finding sense of a journey of the author. Great poets and storytellers use their scribblings to create a believable narrative to provide powerful healing and personal growth for the reader. Poetry makes people vulnerable, allow them to relate to the author and to other individuals. Poetry, can help young and adults, promotes positive mental health by open’s horizons, providing them a new way of thinking in general. Poetry is used in therapeutic ways, helping individuals to overcome childhood traumas, divorces, and grief. Moreover, living in a rough time, where pandemics and wars desensitizes humans, from kindness and care, poetry stands up as a bridge, leading people from hate to love, and from violence to mercy. Poetry can be helpful in many ways. For example, poetry can be used as therapy by helping people heal from grief, and improves reading and writing and helps promote learning a new language.

One way that poetry can be helpful is that it can help people heal from grief. When people are experience sadness after losing someone loved, usually, they cannot express the pain and frustration. Poetry would always be a way to understand one’s pain, true others grief experiences (Bowman, 2021). Poetry is a beautiful art where words would help people to describe their pain, and it also provide a refuge from the pain and stress that comes after a loss (Browman, 2021). Poetry can be considered a journal and be used to track painful emotions. In this way, writing poems can be useful tool in the process of healing. Journal can be kept as feeling evidence, where people can come back to them notes in order to analyze and conclude any change in how they feel. Poetry can help people understand and observe the small steps of their healing and growth process. They notice with a literary journey from how they have grown; from where they were in the past and how they have grown in present. Poetry therefore, can be a useful tool in healing.

Another way that poetry can be helpful is that it can be used as a form of therapy. Taking medication is not the only form of treating depression. Many therapists usually treat depression with the help of poetry journals. Writing or reading poetry, will engage their senses along with their emotions making this lovable art technique, effectively and connecting with their minds (Fernando et al., 2019).The creative art like poetry therapy or storytelling, uses specific text or storytelling with the purpose of healing (Fernado et al., 2019). Bibliotherapy give a chance to the grievers to build a story, and later to be the sources of discussion and reflection (Fernando et al., 2019). Writing poetry can be a useful tool in healing process after traumatic events. Moreover, divorces are on the rise and writing therapy can helps. Most of the doctor would prescribe medication right away because it has the fastest results, which has as well a lot of side effects. Instead, individuals can use writing therapy, which can be use without any side effect. When people write poetry, they were encouraging to express themselves through different form of writing (Fernando et al.,2019). For example, metaphors, rituals, symbols, and storytelling become ways to cope with sadness (Fernando et al.,2019). Metaphors would help individuals to give more meaning to their pain and compare their pain with natural phenomena which bring meaning and understanding of people’s pain. Handwriting is a complex skill, and when it used to be combined with all their senses together: touch, smell, taste, and hearing, it claimed to improve challenging behavior or repetitive behavior (Fernando et al.,2019). When individuals use hands to create something like modeling with clay, painting or writing, they are disconnecting from the reality and begin to relax. Therefore, increasing a person’s motor skills, in the form of writing, can be used in therapy and can be beneficial.

The writer Fernando Mateus Viegas Brandao, conclude that 350 million people suffered from depression. The medication treatment for depression usually has many sides effect, therefore they conclude that drawing, poetry, dance and many other forms of art, become a benefic alternative treatment for psychiatric disorders. Poetry engages people in activities that can discover a new passion which brings their spirit to life again. Poetry can make people to reconnect with themselves and find a way to deal with depression.

Third way that poetry helps is by improving reading comprehension and writing. Poetry is an art, and the world that opens for children can be very fascinated. Imagination is a very important tool in writing in general. When children read books, they created picture in their mind, resulting in increasing imagination, which later own can generate into a story writing. In this way, poetry can be a very important tool, in developing new skills that can be the base of writing. The reading and writing poetry expose young children to enrich their language which helps building greater vocabulary. Introducing poetry among young children would significantly increase their curiosity to read more, and explore improving their knowledge from many subjects (Miquez,2005). Reading and writing poetry both engage a child’s senses and emotions, making the art form experiential and effective, connecting with their minds (Miquez,2005). The musical structure of the rhymes can improve children’s coordination of their breathing, mouth and tongue movements which helps at their physical development. Reciting poetry helps children emotionally and socially. Socially, poetry can help children to grow their personality balanced and expressive way. Many children might have public speaking anxiety; therefore, poetry can help to coop with fear and make it fun and creative.

The final way poetry helps is by allowing the reader to learn a new language. The benefits of poetry allow children, for whom English is a second language, learn verses that are different from their native language. Nursery rhymes are great example of this. “Nursery rhymes encourages the development of an informal teaching tone, playfulness, and engagement which can encourage those just beginning to learn English” (Concannon-Gibney,2021). In other words, the article informed that nursery rhymes are very helpful for children whom English is not their first language. The rhymes aspect, makes it easier for children to expend his or her vocabulary (Concannon-Gibney,2021). For many children nursery rhymes are fun because they look like games and alleviates the pressure on the learning a new language, makes it fun and creative. Anything that brings fun and joy for children, they want to do repeat it. In addition, nursery rhymes use gestures, movements, patterns which do not need translation because they have international meaning. Nursery rimes, uses different way of syntax, which offers children the opportunity to see, they can play with the orders of words in the sentence and observed the new language flexibility (Concannon-Gibney,2021). Children can develop their cognitive function. Poetry uses many similar words which might sound the same but have different meaning (The benefit of reading poetry with your child,2015). Therefore, children developed their sense of patterns, which can help them latter with sequences and sentence structure. This type of sequences helps the brain to retain information, which can help later in life with other academic subjects (The benefit of reading poetry with your child,2015).

In conclusion, poetry is a positive toll in healing one’s from grief, it has therapeutic purpose, helping those who suffer from depression. Improving reading and writing for young children, and learning a new language. Poetry can be used as a medication in a long run without side effects. Poetry can help people to find beautiful resources to understand and heal after a traumatic event. Children develop their literacy skills reading and writing, allows for them to be more aware of their own imagination. Nursery rhymes offer to the young one’s whom English is an additional language, easier and enjoyable ways to learn a new language. Poetry is important because it helps individuals to understand and appreciate the world around. Poetry is powerful tool for children to develop harmoniously and opens up a new world of meaning, words and interpretation. Poetry for sure can make the world a better place and helps people in many situations of their lives.

Ramona:

Overall, a well written paper. Your writing is generally clear, and the paper’s organization is generally good, particularly the transitions from point to point. There are some consistent grammar and/or punctuation errors (highlighted in red) that are mostly comma-related. Your main points did not always align with what was stated in the intro, so you either have to amend the points stated in the intro or move around the information within the paper. You have two sections for therapy, but these are the same point. It is important to do this right because you will confuse your reader. Follow the organization stated in the intro. Your conclusion could be strengthened by restating and summarizing each of your main points separately.

Your application of citations in-text and APA are consistently used well. There are some spacing things happening, but the citations are generally correct. There is a reference on the final page that should be amended/formatted correctly. You did not use any statistics as evidence.

Nice job, Ramona. You have an opportunity to earn a higher grade if you are willing to take the time and effort to amend the paper according to the suggestions I have provided within the margins of the paper. You are welcome to resubmit your paper by the deadline date indicated on our course syllabus. You have a good shot at a full A grade on this paper.
