4.1 – Final Research Paper Proposal & Outline
Choose a global disaster topic of interest to you. This could include any topic we’ve addressed in the course or one we did not have time to cover. The only condition is that your topic has to be a disaster event outside of the U.S., and can be a current or past historical event. Using the rubric criteria, develop an outline as your paper proposal. You will upload your proposal for me to review and approve your topic, and include research information (i.e. journal articles you will review, background, etc.), sources, and other preliminary information. The assignment should demonstrate you have met the objectives of the course, and will also provide you with a jump start on your final paper.
Your proposal should include:
Title
Topic: International disaster of choice.
Introduction: Brief introduction that outlines the disaster of interest.
Pre-disaster assessment of the population, preparedness/readiness/response/recovery programs, etc.
Impacts experienced by the community.
Governmental and non-governmental agency response and support. If international aid was provided, include information on that too.
Recovery challenges.
Mitigation strategies that can help lessen the impact of a future disaster.
Recommendations and Conclusion
Proposed references (5-10 from readings; 5-10 journal articles).
Your proposal should be no more than 3-4 pages, and each section can have bulleted information to highlight your thought process. The idea is to outline/map-out the components of your paper based on the above information; you can include other sections/sub-sections to your paper to address your key arguments as well. I expect solid grammar, punctuation, and to use a scholarly writing style (do not use first person). Your work should be double spaced, one-inch margins, 12 professional point font, and in a Word document or PDF. APA format is required. You must support your work with sources. This includes in-text citations. Your proposal is due on Sunday by 11:59 pm.
*Note: If you do not submit in a Word document, I cannot provide specific comments/edits in the document and return it to you. All students have access to Microsoft Office for free through the university. Link: https://itstore.astate.edu/microsoft-office/Links to an external site.
