What is NARRATIVE WRITING?

The key literary elements used in narrative writing include:• Setting
• Characterization
• Theme
• Plot
• Conflict
• Point of View

To express the perspectives of multiple characters, writers can use multiple first-person narrators, who each tell a piece of the story, or writers can use a third-person point of view to creates a narrator who reveals the thoughts and feelings of each character.
In “I, Tituba” pp. 104 Vol. 1 the narrator uses a first-person point of view. This is a great piece to see how the first-person perspective used dialogue and “inner thoughts” to establish information. Also in this unit, you read “The Story of an Hour” pp. 1 Vol 1 which uses a third-person point of view to reveal the perspective of Mrs. Mallard, while also providing insight into the thoughts of her companions.

Directions:

Choose a scene from Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” to write as a narrative.
Think carefully about which scene you will be able to offer creative inner thoughts of TWO characters.
You do need to ensure you are choosing one of the characters to elaborate on how he/she feels limited by his/her choices AND what needs to be done to gain independence.

➢ Word Minimum 1000 (Max word count 1500)
Checklist of what I need to have in my narrative:
Narrative writing tells a story of experiences or events that have been imagined by a writer or that have happened in real life.
Good narrative writing effectively uses literary elements, narrative techniques, and purposeful structure to create an engaging style and meaningful story.

Make sure you are adding in descriptive details for characters and setting.
• ðDevelop characterization – What they say, how they say it, how they react, how others react to them.
• ðDo you have dialogue?
• ðDo you have at least two perspectives? This means two points of view.
• ðHave you addressed – (1) how the character feels limited at the beginning (2) the decisions the character needs to make to become independent?

After you create your draft, you are going to color code your draft: choose your own colors to
create a key for me.
• ðUnderline the dialogue in ________________________
• ðNext to each paragraph of narrative perspective place a 1 for character 1 and a 2 for character 2.
If you cannot do this, then you do not have two different perspectives and need to adjust
your draft.
• ðPut a box around the sentences that establish how your character feels limited in the color _____________
• ðPut a * (star) next to the sentences that show the decisions your character needs to make to become independent (there should be at least three).
• ðPut a box around the sentences that establish the consequences or responsibilities for the character’s newfound freedom in the color _____________
• ðPut a box around the sentences that establish your setting in the color ______________.

3. Revise or add character dialogue to create a strong sense of perspective (see the “Said” word document in the project folders for additional ideas). On your final draft you will need to BOLD these changes.
4. Edit at least FOUR words or phrases to improve the style of your writing (choose words/phrases that could be replaced with a stronger word choice, one that has more meaning). On your final draft you will need to BOLD these changes.
Grammar and SpellingUse a different color pen to mark your draft and correct spelling errors, comma usage, periods, quotation marks, etc.
