The following options allow us to explore the concepts of sin, evil, and satan/Satan within Judaism, Christianity, or Islam. Pick your favorite (though as always know about all of the work). Be sure to bring all the work we have done from Modules 2 onward forward so you can use of philosophers, theologians, rabbis, and more in this discussion. Use concepts and theories we know about now. Don’t forget to use quoted or paraphrased examples and respond to one other person in your group. I will provide someones discussion board after this is done because I can’t see other people’s until I post mine.
Option A: Discuss how concepts of individual evil, the evil impulses within everyone, are understood in early Judaism. How is defining people or thoughts/actions as evil and associating them with supernatural beings different from saying they are wrong or misguided? Please be sure you are using our readings and discussions in class as sources that you cite when you answer the questions. As with all participation work, you will not see anyone’s work until you first post your own. Please be sure you respond to a peer as well. See our syllabus for the criteria on these participation posts and peer responses.Late work is accepted up through the end of the third late day for a 10% per day penalty, then not accepted after the third late day passes.
Option B: Discuss the development of satan/Satan within Judaism. What role does this entity play as it develops and why do you think satan becomes Satan for some Jews?
Option C: How did the concept of evil and the Devil evolve in Christianity? What was the relationship between heresy, non-belief in Christianity, Judaism, and evil/Devil in early/medieval Christian thought?
Option D: What is the concept of evil and Satan in Islam? In what ways is it simian/different than in the other Abrahamic religions? Why might it be similar/different?
Option D: Discuss the construction of the belief in evil witches (not asking about Wicca – that is a nature based religion – I am asking about the construct of the shape changing, flying, soul selling witch). Be sure to discuss gender and religion when discussing why people believed in witches, what witches were believed to do, and how witches were punished.
Option E: Discuss beliefs about possession. What are the dangers of believing in possession? What do you think is happening?
