Discussion PreparationChapter 1 taught us about how widespread drug use and its cost to society.
Chapter 2 taught us theories of addiction. You now know that drugs literally change your brain by largely impacting dopamine, pleasure and the reward systems in the central nervous system. (image:Brain metabolism and drug addiction.jpg)
One video showed us that industry not only promotes us and children to develop habits but commercial interests also target poor communities and minorities.
Another video shows how weakness is not really the problem when the cues to addiction are so powerful, including the reward systems discussed in the chapter. I am not sure “Trust” is the answer but I think our “knee jerk” reaction to drug use, Good VS Bad is pretty outdated!
What we have is a person in despair. Yes, the may make bad decisions. But can they easily help themselves? Probably not alone. Can WE help though? (image: Bathing in Despair.png)
So, we KNOW drug use is costly and dangerous. We also know, that once you are addicted it is VERY HARD to stop for many people. And now we have added in we just might be taken advantage of by marketing and commercial interests. NOW lets talk policy!! You need to understand BOTH sides of the issue to have great ideas.
Discussion Prompt All facts must have a reference. I will check post dates. You CANNOT have the same reference as someone else so hustle up and get your work in early or pick another topic. ; )

1.Find one fact that COMPARES DRUG DEATHS FROM 1990-NOW AND ONE PRIOR. Then provide a short post on why you think its gone up including one more FACT telling us why your idea is supported. Tell us who benefits from the drug trade here.
2.Look up the COST OF REHAB VS PRISON FOR DRUG USE. Tell us which is more and cite your source. Tell us one reason why completely legalizing drugs may be a problem. Use a FACT to support your idea. Give us another feasible solution to complete legalization of drugs vs going to jail.
3. Look up the ACCIDENT RATE in the US UNDER THE USE OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. Cite your source. Tell us the penalty in California vs any other place (it cannot be one someone else posted). Propose a way to use policy to keep innocent people safe from impaired drivers. You can use examples that have worked in other countries with lower rates. Tell us why you think policy is so lax in the US for DUI.
4. Pick the US and one other county. COMPARE THE ADDICTION RATES AND PENALTIES BETWEEN THE TWO. You cannot do the same country as another post. Make a comment on how these are similar or different. Tell us why you think these counties are in these situations (high producer or high user).
5. FIND THE TOP PRODUCING COUNTRY OF DRUGS IN THE WORLD. Tell us about that drug and where it is used most. FIND THE TOP PRODUCING FENTANYL SUPPLIER. Tell us about the penalty for drug use in these high producing countries. Tell us how US policy is with these two countries.
Make sure to include references with at least one other outside source (article, book or a web source) and cite that resource at the end of your post using APA reference style. . THIS IS WHY WE DID THE ASSIGNMENT LAST WEEK. YOU MUST HAVE TWO REFERENCES AND SHOW IT IN THE TEXT FOR FULL CREDIT. For example you cant say “drugs increase crime” without a source that PROVES it.
