This activity is important because virtual employees are increasingly considered a natural part of the workforce. Virtual teams have their own challenges as well as benefits. Managers must know how to promote teamwork and effective work processes in a virtual environment.
The goal of this exercise is to demonstrate your understanding of the difference, particularly in virtual environments, by reading a case and answering the following questions.
Case Analysis (Remote Work Thrives at Dell)
Dell Technologies is one of the world’s most advanced companies for the remote workforce. The company, which develops, sells and supports computers, was valued in 2019 at more than $36 billion and employs more than 150 thousand workers worldwide. Check out Dell’s careers web page for flexible work opportunities and you’ll see the company’s pride that employees are able to choose “the style of work that best meets their needs on the job and in their personal lives.”
Dell states that its remote teams are as productive, if not more, versus personal teams. The company uses team technology to connect with chats, content sharing, and group video calls. Video is credited with being extremely important in engaging team members, including the executive teams. In fact, the company stated that its remote team members are four times as likely to be engaged and twice as likely to want to remain in their current jobs.
Slack in one program was used to facilitate collaboration with a centralized workspace. Adobe Connect allows the creation of information such as training manuals and presentations as well as conferences. Skype is the video conferencing software that is used by many people who work from their laptops as well. In short, the marketplace offers many ways for teams to collaborate virtually and maintain the ability to self-manage. Moreover, the software allows for highly complex group projects that can be more productive remotely when sharing documents, simulations and performing analysis in real time.
Dell uses an extremely high level of constant communication with co-workers, such as in-company chats and social media. The ability to “follow up” and chat with team members allows you to solve problems that appear infrequently and unexpectedly. Finding and putting together your team can be easier with remote work than in person because everyone is connected.
Because Dell has used its remote workforce since 2009, the company estimates it saved $12 million in fuel costs, not to mention the associated environmental benefits.
The future is getting more remote for Dell. The company now plans that by 2020, global employee participation in remote work options will increase to 50% of its workforce.
