Social Media Use Does More Harm Than Good

Hewson, Victoria, and A. Economic. “MORE HARM THAN GOOD?” (2021).

This peer-reviewed article talks about how social media use has increased the sharing of harmful information. The increase of social media platforms has made it possible for children and teenagers to be exposed to harmful content and information on social media. The article is credible because it uses information collected from studies conducted on people. Also, the author has researched widely and appropriately and shared facts without letting their opinion influence their readers. The article has used credible sources that are useful in social media and its negative influence on its users. The article is relevant to my topic because it highlights the dangers that social media users, especially teenagers and young adults, have been exposed to. The author highlights cyberbullying, hate speech, terrorism, self-harm, and disinformation as some of the harmful content that the rise in social media use has brought to society. The article supports the claim that although social media has its advantages, it has done more harm than good.

Boer, Maartje, et al. “Adolescents’ intense and problematic social media use and their well-being in 29 countries.” Journal of adolescent health 66.6 (2020): S89-S99.

This article explores the effects of social media use by considering three associations. The first association is on the well-being of adolescents and whether it is affected by continuous use of social media. The next association is whether the adolescents’ country determines the association of well-being and social media use (SMU). The last association is on the availability of internet access in these countries. The study concluded that in countries where social media use is not intense, most intense social media users complained of reduced life satisfaction. These results show a connection between social media use and the reduced quality of life and well-being of the users. The article is credible because it uses information from a study conducted by the authors. Also, the article has employed data and statistics from previous studies. The article is relevant to my topic because it highlights how social media use reduces the quality of life for its users.

Al-Menayes, Jamal J. “Social media use, engagement and addiction as predictors of academic performance.” International Journal of Psychological Studies 7.4 (2015): 86-94.

The author explores the effects of social media use on the academic performance of students. The author has used several credible sources in his research, and he has cited them appropriately. He has used data and statistics found in previous studies to back up his argument that social media negatively affects students’ academic performance. He argues that the longer students spend time on social media, their academic performance is affected. He also studied the effects that social media engagement had on the academic performance of various students. The study concluded that engagement did not directly influence or affect academic performance. This article is relevant to my topic because it highlights the negative effects of social media on students’ academic performance. The article shows a likelihood of improved academic performance when students reduce their social media use.

Al-Menayes, Jamal. “The relationship between mobile social media use and academic performance in university students.” New Media and Mass Communication 25 (2014): 23-29.

This article explores the relationship between social media use and the academic performance of students. The author’s previous works on the same topic enhance the credibility of this source. The author has conducted similar studies in the past and used several related pieces of research in his study, which indicates his expertise in the topic. This study was conducted at Kuwait University and used questionnaires that were distributed to students in the university. The questionnaires sought to see the relationship between social media use and academic performance. The study concluded that many of the participants were aware of the negative effects that social media had on their grades. The article is relevant to my topic because it shows that although many students are aware of social media’s effects on their studies, they did not take conscious steps to reduce their usage. This conclusion highlights the social media addiction that many students are suffering from. The addiction is so strong that they do not consider the negative effects on their lives.

Abi-Jaoude, Elia, Karline Treurnicht Naylor, and Antonio Pignatiello. “Smartphones, social media use and youth mental health.” Cmaj 192.6 (2020): E136-E141.

This article explores the relationship between mental health issues in youths and social media use. According to the authors, there is a connection between the rise of mental health issues and increased social media usage. The article highlights the negative aspects of social media, such as cyberbullying and negative relationships among youth, and the increase in suicidal thoughts and self-harm. The article has used several peer-reviewed articles that dealt with the issue. These previous articles and studies contain information that the authors have analyzed, and combined with their research, have concluded that social media use has done more harm than good. The article is credible because it has analyzed data from 2009 to 2020, showing the increase in mental health issues among the youth. During this period, the use of social media uses increased among young adults and teenagers. The article is relevant to my topic because it shows how harmful social media has been to the well-being of youth and young adults. Mental health issues have been a huge cause for concern in society for many years because of the damage it has on the well-being of the people affected. People have lost their lives due to mental health h issues, and some have become addicted to substance abuse, which has also led to a decline in their quality of life.
