X9173: Placement and Curriculum

Annotated Bibliography

This assessment task is only for students who accrued 0 – 29 hours of experience on placement.

Read this guidance in conjunction with the annotated bibliography template in the Myplace file.

This assignment will allow students who did not undertake many placement hours the opportunity to learn about one aspect of the Getting It Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) wellbeing (SHANARRI) indicators in depth. Students will follow the guidance below to create an annotated bibliography about ONE of the wellbeing indicators. Students can choose a theme that is of particular interest to them.

For submission: Students in this category will upload their placement file which will contain their learning from placement (if they undertook placement) and learning from the additional activities they selected from the Additional Activities Booklet on Myplace. They will upload their placement report if they have one. Finally, they will upload the annotated bibliography.

Creating an Annotated Bibliography

For the purposes of this assignment, you should:

Select one theme from the GIRFEC wellbeing indicators (Safe, Healthy, Active, Nurtured, Achieving, Respected, Responsible, Included) and provide a rationale for your topic choice. (250 words)

In this rationale you are expected to state the SHANARRI indicator you chose and explain to the reader why you have chosen this theme. You can relate this to your placement experience, the additional activities you undertook, a professional interest or another reason but the explanation must justify your choice. You should explain to the reader what you hope to find out about this theme through your reading; this will give your assignment purpose and focus. Creating a sub-theme within your theme will help you to do this – listen to the voice over on the powerpoint. To enhance the quality of your writing you can link your rationale to reading to support your decision-making.

Provide five annotations from five relevant sources. Each annotation should be preceded by a full APA 7 reference. (250 – 300 words per annotation. Do not include references in your word count.)

Students will spend time online reading about the SHANARRI indicator they chose. You will search for relevant and reliable sources using Google Scholar and Suprimo from the University Library. You cannot read everything about your theme so be selective about what you are looking for. For example, if you chose Inclusion, you might want to look at ways to promote positive behaviour in order to ensure

children stay in school. Or perhaps you will choose Healthy and you will read about the strategies being used in primary schools to address obesity. Keep your focus tight as it will help you to get better depth in your assignment.

You will present the findings from what you have read with a full APA reference for this piece followed by key learning from what you read. This is a simple presentation of what another author wrote but in your own words. Avoid plagiarism and don’t use quotes unless they are completely necessary. The skill here is in being able to paraphrase. You are not expected to give your opinion or to discuss what you have read. It is an annotation: an explanation of why this was relevant to your study and a short synopsis of what the writer said that was of importance. It should be clear from the annotation why you selected this item as a source to include in this annotated bibliography.

Provide a discussion of your learning from this research in a final section that synthesises what you have read. (250 words)

Draw your assignment to a close by writing about what you have learned about the SHANARRI indicator you chose. You might compare and contrast what you discovered from your reading. You might write about what you learned and what you thought of your findings. You might write about what surprised you or about gaps you still have in your knowledge. You might write about things that you still need to learn. Or you might write about a combination of these things. You are expected to reflect on your reading and learning in this section.

Create a reference list at the end of the assignment which draws all five references together in one list.

Your reference list should be in alphabetical order and should conform to all APA 7 referencing requirements. This is an academic skills essay so you can pick up additional marks by paying careful attention to presentation, punctuation and use of italics.

Attention should be paid to spelling, grammar, punctuation and presentation throughout.

The assignment will be 1,750 – 2,000 words in length (+/-10%). References should not be included in the word count.

General notes on submission:

Plagiarism will be dealt with in accordance with the University’s regulations. You should access the following university web-page which explains those regulations and gives lots of good advice about how to avoid falling into the plagiarism trap: https://www.strath.ac.uk/media/ps/cs/gmap/plagiarism/plagiarism_student_booklet.pdf

APA 7 Referencing Guidelines can be found here: https://guides.lib.strath.ac.uk/referencing_guide/apa
