The Remaking of American History
In 2015, the state of Texas published social studies textbooks that described American slavery as a an “upside” institution for the Southern economy and African American Culture and even stated that the relationship between African Slaves and their white slaver owners wasn’t all horrendous. In fact, African slaves are referred to as “migrated workers,” that according to a Texas social studies textbook “reported that their masters treated them kindly” although “Whippings, brandings, and even worse of torture was all part of American slavery?” (Textbooks was revised the following year.)
How does the film 1804: The Hidden History of Haiti, Stono Rebellion, Seminoles Wars and other Slave Risings from 1760 -1850 in North America speak to that narrative? If Africans were content with their enslavement, why do we have so many runaways and slaves insurrections stories like Frederick Douglass, Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey, Harriet Tubman and the Haiti Revolution?
