The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo promised all Mexicans living north of the Rio Grande River the opportunity to become U.S. Citizens with all the rights and privileges. Yet, as we have seen over the last few weeks, the realization of this promise did not go exactly as written in the treaty. In fact, many scholars have referred to this treaty as the 2nd conquest. For this week’s discussion, consider how this weeks readings on citizenship connect with the events that took place immediately following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and beyond.
