-“The Ruined Maid””Some polish is gained with one’s ruin,” said she.”We never do work when we’re ruined”The figurative languages that are used in these two lines of the poems are metaphor and alliteration. The term “polish” is used a metaphor describing the new life Amelia had adopted from the rural grime. “We never do work when we’re ruined” is alliteration being used in the poem.Amelia had been ruined by becoming a rich man’s mistress and living the life of luxury. I think that “We never do work when we’re ruined is basically saying that since Amelia became the rich man’s mistress she doesn’t have to work because he gives her anything that she may need.
-The Ruined Maid by Thomas Harris — “Your hands were like paws then, your face blue and bleakBut now I’m bewitched by your delicate cheek(Lines 13-14)In the Poem The Ruined Maid by Thomas Harris discuss the dismissal of a housecleaner also known as a maid. The figurative language used in these two lines are a simile and metaphor. The word “like” used in line 13 is used to compare the maid’s hands to animal paws. That means at first the maid was sweet and delicate, but now the maid is rougher. In line 14 it describes being turned by the maid’s delicate cheek. The maid turned her cheek and left now the audience is to believe the made is evil.
